Where does this wildfire map get its data?
Fire locations, size and containment come from NIFC's WFIGS service, which collects incident reports from federal, state and local fire agencies. Alerts come from the National Weather Service and air quality from the Open-Meteo CAMS forecast.
How current is the fire map?
The map loads the current incident list every time you open the page. Each fire shows when its record was last updated; large fires are usually updated at least daily, small new starts can take a few hours to appear.
Does the map show evacuation zones?
No. Evacuation orders and warnings are issued by county sheriffs and emergency managers — check your county's alert system. The National Weather Service relays some evacuation messages, and those appear in the alerts list when active.
Why is a fire shown as 100% contained but still listed?
Containment means a control line surrounds the fire; crews may still be working inside it. Contained fires stay in the current list until the agency declares them out.
